Types of Unhealthy Relationships
There are many types of unhealthy relationships and in my memoir, Following the Whispers I talk about a few. The types of unhealthy relationships I cover are: child to parent, parent to child, friendships, sexual relationships, the relationships between me and men, and my relationship to self.
In childhood, the types of unhealthy relationships which impacted me the most involved my parents and the emotional, psychological and spiritual abuse they unknowingly inflicted. Adolescence encompassed types of unhealthy relationships that included friendships as well as sexual encounters with boys. I say sexual encounters because these were not relationships but rather types of unhealthy relationships. I simply provided sexual pleasure in hopes of getting a boy to like me. In friendships, it was more of the same. I focused on doing what I thought would please them so they would continue to be my friend. Needless to say, these types of unhealthy relationships do not provide nurturing. At the time I was incapable of choosing wisely.
As an adult, the types of unhealthy relationships I became embroiled in proliferated. Two bad marriages and a long-term relationship with a gay man (we were business partners) fueled an already rampant self-hatred burning in my soul and when I lost custody of my only child, that self-hatred almost destroyed me.
That crisis, however, also catapulted me into a journey of awakening consciousness which enabled me to understand the types of unhealthy relationships I’d been choosing and why. Following the Whispers traces the path I took in uncovering the types of unhealthy relationships which fueled my self-hatred and how I finally learned to make better choices and eventually put out that fire.
