Self-Esteem/Low Self-Esteem
Self-Esteem/Low Self-esteem is an issue fundamentally at the heart of my life. My memoir, Following the Whispers digs deeply into why self-esteem/low self-esteem issues impacted me so deeply. In order to have self-esteem/low self-esteem, one must first have a self. For many years, I had no self-identity to speak of. My spirit had been crushed when I was around three years old, and from that time on, events and circumstances for which I had no control buried my identity even deeper.
Now I understand how behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected by self-esteem/low self-esteem, but for most of my adult life, I had no clue as to why I was so miserable. When I was twenty-eight, I lost custody of my only child. It was the 1970’s—a time when women did not lose custody. It fueled an already rampant self-hatred burning in my soul and my internal self-esteem/low self-esteem battle raged on.
That same tragedy, however, catapulted me onto a path of healing to begin dealing with my self-esteem/low self-esteem. For the next twenty or so years, I sought answers to why I had lost my child in many ways: spirituality, self-help groups, personal therapy, reading self-help books and spiritual texts, and attending twelve-step programs, which delve into self-esteem/low
self-esteem issues. I discovered the reasons why self-hatred lived in my soul and ways to
let go of it.
Following the Whispers follows the trajectory of my self-esteem/low self-esteem life. It reveals behavior and choices that are exemplified by self-esteem/low self-esteem feelings and shows how I finally found a sense of self buttressed by a good, strong, healthy self-esteem.
